I had the opportunity to have a lengthy conversation with Terry Robarts after the races last night. I asked if he would support us in donating the pictures for the three families that win the night at Varney including their picture with the driver of their choice. Terry said he would like to help us and we can discuss things to do. By the way, he purchased two license plate frames from us at the start of last night! I assume they will go on a vehicle and not worn with a belt when wearing the Hillbilly hats they purchased in the past! :D
My idea, which I will suggest next week if others agree, is to see if he will donate the three family pictures and see if we can do something a little special with the picture. We can put the "T.W. Robarts" logo on the front of the draw tickets. On the back of the tickets will be contact information for each of the businesses that have donated prizes so he would get recognition there as well.
Terry has invested allot of money over the winter in more equipment to deal with the lighting and feels everyone will be happy with the improved quality of the pictures. He has also spent a considerable amount of money to sponsor the late models and promote Varney away from the track. He truly wants to do well and do well for Varney and its participants. Dave Franks is iconic in racing and Terry is trying to provide the participants and fans at Varney with the same quality mementos of their time there. I wish I could remember some of the other things he mentioned he has done. I am going to try and get the display boards done for next week and Terry will put some pictures in there so everyone can see first hand how they have dealt with Mother Nature. These are the cabinets that will hold the Michigan posters and Special Olympic posters. Ken has said where to mount them. The one in the pits will be on the east side of the concession stand.
We talked about his pictures and how the quality is intentionally downgraded on the website so the pictures are not "stolen". Then I thought of the times I have used his pictures in different posts here. I didn't realize that meant "stolen". I always assumed "stolen" was when the picture was printed. If I am bad in the future - and I am sure I will be - I will have to give credit to T.W. Robarts for the picture and blame any editing on someone else! Do I have any volunteers? :D
:( Unfortunately Terry saw the "b*tch session" here last year when there was a picture we did not like. I think it was the feature winner when we were all looking elsewhere. I remember I knew it at the time and made a snide remark. I guess I should have asked politely if the picture could be retaken.
One comment Terry made was sobering and when I put myself in his shoes it is sad. This is their fourth year at Varney and he said they are still "the outsiders". Other than Clark and Ingrid, when Clark returned to Varney in 2006 I think Dennis was the only one I knew. In that amount of time I think of all the people I have come to know so well since then and what I would be missing if we had not all become friends. I know there will be a big "Hi Terry" the next time I pass him around the track.
Terry wants to promote the track and obviously his business when he has his truck wrapped. We want to promote the track and Hillbilly Racing. I think we would do well to team up in some of our endeavours and it would be a win-win for everyone. For example, to have our truck, Terry's truck, and the "3" pace car (if it runs) and some Stock 4's in the Creemore parade, everyone will remember Varney! The athletes that hand out a track schedule and Special Olympic info could easily hand out a T.W. Robarts business card with no extra effort. If we get more people to the track it helps Ken and in the long run us. More pictures bought by fans helps Terry and in the end the drivers that want to buy pictures at an affordable price.
When Clark built the Hillbilly truck he made a small bench in case Terry wanted to take pictures of some pace laps or Ingrid wanted to video. If anyone driving the pace truck thinks of it, you may want to keep an eye out in case he wants to take some pictures from the truck.
One picture I thought we could get him to take is to get all the drivers that decide to participate, to pose around the truck. I don't mean to just stand but to be placed in different positions. The drivers would be in their driver suits and hopefully no hats so you can see their faces. I think it would make a great promotional picture. Think of the opening of the Family Feud were the family is sitting like they are in a picture. That is the idea I have but around the truck and not living room furniture!
So, enough preaching and remorse. Terry would like to help us so if you have ideas let's here them. If you have ideas how we can work together and each promote our causes and the track, please post them. If Tessa would have pulled over and let Thomas pass then I would go buy a picture.
