| The Building of Tessa's 1988 Scirocco... |
The car Tessa is racing is a 1988 volkswagon scirocco. It was purchased in late February of 2001 for $400 cdn. Right off the top, we sold the engine, transmission and mag wheels for $200 cdn, which brought the initial cost of the car to $200. cdn.
Immediately after purchase, the car was completely stripped down to a rolling chassis, All glass was removed and discarded. The interior was donated to a friend who recycles vw parts. |

The steel tubing was purchased from Elma Steel in Listowel, Ont., at a cost of approx. $275 for 120 feet, plus some steel plating. A tube bender was borrowed from Storey Racing(thanks Murray). The design and assembly of the roll cage was done at Canadian Tire in Guelph Ont. by yours truly. The final welding was completed at Hort Manufacturing In Arthur Ont. by my good friend Hubert Hoerdt. Hubert has greatly assisted me in the construction of all my racecars, this being # four. Hubert has also provided sponsorship for my racing efforts as well as storage and workspace. Without his assistance, none of this would be possible. Many thanks Hubert, your efforts are greatly appreciated. |
The roll cage installation was not finished until mid april. with opening night being may 5, we were quickly running out of time. The car still needed motor, transmission, wiring, fuel cell and pump, steering rack, suspension work, seat and seat belts, gauges and switches, lexan windshield plus bodywork, paint and lettering. Ouch!! Plus my van needed some major suspension work and a new fuel tank. Things were not looking good. |

The engine came from my 1984 jetta parts car. I had overhauled it earlier in the winter and just had to install it. The transmission was purchased from my buddy John (Mr.Topspeed) earlier in the winter for $100 cdn. All the remaining parts that were needed came from my various parts cars. The fuel cell was purchased from Grisdales in Dundas for $200 cdn. The safety gear I had from previous years racing. After many late nights the car was somewhat race ready and made it for opening nite, barely. The final bodywork was not complete until the third week of racing. |
